Before assuming his position as
Executive Director of Gateway Legal Services in 1998, Michael Ferry served for 19 years as
a staff attorney, managing attorney, training and community education coordinator for
Legal Services of Eastern Missouri.
Michael has a long record of involvement in community
education and continuing legal education. Since 1989 he has written Legally Speaking,
a weekly column on legal questions for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He has also
co-produced radio and cable television programs on legal topics, and has received one
national award and two St. Louis "Emmy" Award nominations for this work. He was
also editor of Missouri Consumer Law, 2nd ed., published by the Missouri
Bar, and now serves as contributing editor for Consumer Warranty Law, published by
the National Consumer Law Center. |

In 1994 Michael received the National Consumer Law Centers Vern
Countryman Award for "outstanding efforts to strengthen and affirm the rights of low
income Americans through the practice of consumer law." He has served on the Consumer
Advisory Council of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System (1993-1995). He
currently serves on the Board of Directors of the National Consumer Law Center, and as an
adjunct professor at Washington University School of Law. Earlier this year he was elected
to the American College of Consumer Financial Services Lawyers, the first lawyer from St.
Louis to be so honored. He is currently a Consumer Fellow of the Uniform Commercial Code
Committee of the Business Law Section of the American Bar Association, and before that was
a Consumer Fellow of the Consumer Financial Services Committee of the Business Law Section
of the ABA. He is the only person ever to serve as a Consumer Fellow for two ABA Business
Law Section committees. |

| Also a former Legal Services of Eastern Missouri staff
attorney, Philip now handles primarily Social Security cases for Gateway. Philip is
a member of the Administrative Law and Practice Committee of the Bar Association of
Metropolitan St. Louis. While attending law school, Philip received the Christophine G. Mutharika
International Law Prize from Washington University School of Law. Philip is admitted to practice
in Missouri; before the United States District Courts for the Eastern District of Missouri,
the Western District of Missouri, and the
Southern District of Illinois; and before the Eighth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals. |

Philip has presented several continuing legal education
programs on such topics as: new mental disability regulations, how to calculate fees and
the SSI/DIB offset in Social Security cases, and Social Security overpayments. At
Gateway, he specializes in drafting pleadings, preparing appeals, verifying benefit
amounts, and offset calculations. Philip frequently represents claimants in hearings held
outside the St. Louis metropolitan area, including Hannibal, Columbia, and
Springfield. |

Dan
Krause

Dan
Krause began working at Gateway in 2005, shortly after his graduation from
the University of Missouri School of Law. While in law school, Dan was
a two-time member of the Jessup International Moot Court Team and an intern
at the Missouri State Public Defender’s Office in Columbia. Dan
attended the University of Missouri as an undergraduate as well, where he
received Bachelor’s degrees in English and History.

In
addition, Dan has studied literature at the University of Essex in
Colchester, England and Comparative Law at the University of Western Cape
in Cape Town, South Africa. After these travels, Dan is excited to
be handling Social Security cases for Gateway’s clients and proud to be
serving the community of his native St. Louis. |

Lumpkins

Deb comes to Gateway Legal Services from private
practice in Hugo, Oklahoma, where she specialized in consumer protection
law, especially in the areas of predatory mortgage lending and auto fraud.
Her practice also included representing deprived and neglected
children in juvenile cases and she was municipal attorney for the City of
Hugo, Oklahoma. She has been
an active member of the state pro bono panel, receiving the 1994 Oklahoma
Bar Association’s Pro Bono Award, a 2000 Pro Bono Award from Legal
Services of Eastern Oklahoma, Inc., and a 2002 Pro Bono Award from Legal
Aid Services of Oklahoma and Oklahoma Indian Legal Services.

Deb’s past experience
includes work as staff attorney with Legal Services of Eastern Oklahoma,
Inc., in both the Muskogee and Hugo law offices; as general counsel for
Midwestern Electronics, Inc., a contract electronic manufacturer in the
Kansas City area; and as adjunct faculty member for Baker University
School of Professional and Graduate Studies in Overland Park, Kansas,
teaching business law and government regulation.
Deb is admitted to practice law in Missouri, Oklahoma and
Kansas; before the United States District Courts for the Eastern District of
Missouri, Western District of Missouri, Southern District of Illinois, and
the Eastern District of Oklahoma; and before the Circuit Court of Appeals
for the Eighth Circuit. |
